2018 Honda CRF250R

Big Red gets it right.

2018 Honda CRF250RHonda

The latest CRF250R incorporates the most significant changes in the four-stroke red racer’s 15-year history. That’s because, for the first time, Honda abandoned the perennial Unicam head design for a more traditional DOHC setup, added electric start, and adopted a unique dual exhaust system that routes gases from each of the two ports through a separate header and muffler. Three engine map settings are included: stock, smooth, and aggressive.

The chassis mirrors that of the latest CRF450R, which was all-new in 2017. Key components include a Showa 49mm A-Kit-style spring fork (replacing the previous Showa SFF TAC fork), a sweet titanium fuel tank, and CRF450R-style bodywork. These changes help the CRF250R feel light and nimble in all situations, despite the inconvenient truth that the extra camshaft and associated parts, exhaust system, and electron-driven starter bump the race weight 6 pounds to a claimed 237 pounds. Nevertheless, coupled with the new engine’s passion for high revs, the improvements make this CRF250R Honda’s perfect partner in 250cc moto-crime.

Likes: Everything…power, handling, and an electric starter

Dislikes: Say no to MX weight gain! And the complexity of separate exhaust systems

Verdict: The ride of your 250cc moto-life
