The second-largest engine displacement in the two-stroke off-road bike category is 250cc, the largest being the 300cc machines. While 300cc engines are more commonly associated with having a plentiful amount of torque and good low-end power, 250cc two-strokes, by comparison, usually have a harder-hitting midrange and an engine character that favors top-end power. Manufacturers in the 250cc two-stroke off-road dirt bike market include KTM, Husqvarna, Yamaha, Beta, GasGas, TM, and Sherco.
KTM's 250cc two-stroke models for 2019 include the 250 XC and 250 XC-W TPI. The 250 XC engine is fed by a Mikuni 38mm flat-slide carburetor, while the 250 XC-W TPI is fuel injected with a Dell'Orto 39mm throttle body. Husqvarna's one and only 250cc two-stroke off-road bike in 2019 is the TE 250i, which is also fuel injected by a Dell'Orto 39mm throttle body. The Yamaha YZ250X is based on the YZ250 motocross bike, but it has several off-road-specific features including a wide-ratio transmission, different suspension settings, a narrow expansion chamber, an 18-inch rear wheel, a sealed O-ring chain, a kickstand, and Dunlop AT81 tires.
Beta offers two 2019 model 250cc two-strokes—the 250 RR and 250 RR Race Edition. The 250 RR is intended for the casual off-road rider, while the 250 RR Race Edition for the more serious rider or racer. The GasGas XC250 and EC250 were completely new in 2018 and enjoyed minor revisions in 2019. Special-edition models of the EC250 include the EC250 Ranger and EC250 Six Days Chile. TM offers one 250cc off-road two-stroke in its 2019 lineup with the EN250, while French manufacturer Sherco produces three with its 250 SE Racing, 250 SC, and 250 SE Factory.
