2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S Technical Information

Features and specifications of Suzuki’s new-for-2025 dual sport bike that replaces the DR-Z400S.

Not long after its debut in 2000, the DR-Z400S became a popular sight far and wide—both in the dirt and on the road. Willing and able to tackle everything from vet motocross tracks to freeways, this Suzuki proved capable across different riding types and terrain, making it an ideal machine of choice for dual sport enthusiasts who live (and ride motorcycles) by the famous line in William Cowper’s poem, The Task, that “Variety’s the very spice of life.”

No longer compliant with the latest regulations in some countries, the DR-Z400S had to be updated to satisfy the demands of today’s market such as Euro 5 emissions standards, OBD II requirements, and regulations pertaining to brake systems and noise. Suzuki answered the call and created the DR-Z4S—a more modern version of the well-loved DR-Z400S. We’ve yet to ride the DR-Z4S, and while we await the opportunity to do so, we’ve compiled some technical information about it with corresponding photos here.

The DR-Z400S enjoyed a successful run in Suzuki’s lineup. The DR-Z4S (pictured) replaces it for 2025 and beyond.Suzuki
The DR-Z4S is powered by a liquid-cooled DOHC four-stroke 398cc single-cylinder engine. Displacement, bore, and stroke are all the same as the DR-Z400S at 398cc, 90.0mm, and 62.6mm, respectively. A notable difference is the DR-Z4S is fuel injected rather than carbureted like the DR-Z400S.Suzuki
Compression ratio is reduced slightly from the DR-Z400S at 11.1:1, and gearbox remains a five-speed.Suzuki
A new piston design is said to help achieve smoother engine operation and reduce mechanical loss.Suzuki
Titanium intake valves and hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves are designed to assist in maximizing combustion efficiency and performance.Suzuki
Camshaft profiles are new for greater intake lift and optimized valve overlap, both of which contribute to better engine performance and Euro 5 emissions compliance.Suzuki
Why dual spark plugs? To help maximize combustion efficiency and performance across the engine’s operating range, Suzuki says.Suzuki
A 42mm throttle body is employed on the DR-Z4S, which replaces the Mikuni BSR36 carburetor found on the DR-Z400S.Suzuki
Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) is said to provide positive clutch engagement off- and on-road, and smoother deceleration and gear changes.Suzuki
The assist function leverages a cam to engage the clutch sleeve hub and pressure disc together, and is designed to efficiently transfer torque to the rear wheel under acceleration, all while using softer clutch springs.Suzuki
The slipper clutch partially disengages when downshifting to mitigate the effect of engine-braking.Suzuki
Every aspect of the new airbox design, including its capacity and outlet shape, is aimed at reducing intake air resistance.Suzuki
Exhaust system features a dual-stage catalytic converter that helps satisfy Euro 5 emissions standards.Suzuki
There’s no shortage of sensors on the DR-Z4S. Position sensors alone including ones for crankshaft, gear, accelerator, and throttle. Other sensors are for intake air temperature, and front and rear wheel speed. This diagram also shows the electric throttle valve, ECM, ABS unit, ignition coil, instrument cluster, and left handlebar switch.Suzuki
The ABS unit. Available ABS modes on the DR-Z4S are front and rear on, front on and rear off, and front and rear off.Suzuki
In the suspension department, a KYB inverted fork that’s compression and rebound damping adjustable offers 11 inches of travel. In the rear a KYB shock that’s tunable for spring preload, compression damping, and rebound damping has 11.7 inches of travel.Suzuki
Frame construction remains steel, but it’s newly designed to enhance stability while still being responsive to rider inputs.Suzuki
One of Suzuki’s goals with the new chassis is to make the DR-Z4S even more effective on twisty trails than the DR-Z400S.Suzuki
An aluminum skid plate (or “under cover,” as Suzuki calls it) is fitted to the DR-Z4S in stock trim.Suzuki
Brake disc sizes increase by 20mm front and rear over the DR-Z400S. Stock tires on the DR-Z4S are IRC’s Trail Winner GP-410.Suzuki
Footpegs are a wider design.Suzuki
In an effort to improve rider comfort, Suzuki optimized seat width.Suzuki
Fuel tank is newly designed to be compact and lightweight.Suzuki
An LED headlight incorporates low and high beams into a single projector module.Suzuki
Rear combination light is new and features LEDs too.Suzuki
Control area is chock-full of more advanced technological features.Suzuki
LCD instrument panel is newly designed and one of the many components shared with the DR-Z4SM supermoto model.Suzuki
Selecting modes and changing settings of the electronic rider-assist systems is done by mode button, and up and down switches on the left side of the handlebar, where there’s also turn signals and a button for the horn.Suzuki
On the right side of the handlebar are engine start, engine stop, and hazard light buttons.Suzuki
Grips were changed from full-waffle to half-waffle.Suzuki
Mirrors are new and have a parallelogram shape.Suzuki
The Hamamatsu manufacturer took care to ensure the new bodywork hugs the chassis tightly, and finished it off with modern and simple radiator shroud graphics.Suzuki
Suzuki’s DR-Z4S is available in two colors— Champion Yellow No. 2/Solid Special White No. 2 (left) and Solid Iron Gray (right). Suggested retail price is $8999.Suzuki
