This is the weekly spot for updates, unveils, insights, and info on cool products in the dirt-riding world. Sometimes it will be brand new, never before seen items, sometimes it will be in-progress tests, and sometimes it will be tried and true classic products we can’t live without. Thanks for stopping by.
This week we are checking out Enduro Engineering’s newly redesigned skid plate for the ’16 KTM 250/350 four-strokes. Now, before you say, “It looks the same,” we can say that it isn’t. First, since the 2016 KTMs have all new frames, the skid plates had to be reshaped to properly match up with the bikes. Also, Enduro Engineering made new skid plates for all the 2016 KTMs from the 450 to the 250/300 two-strokes.
This frame and engine protector is CNC machined from 5052H32 aluminum alloy and has larger wings on the sides for more coverage of the cases and water pump. The front section is taller to keep more front wheel roost from between the plate and engine. The vents have been redesigned to better flow air and let mud and debris to fall out. Lastly they added some foot peg mount coverage to the rear section of the plate.
Skid plates are an absolute necessity off-road, and a really good idea for a track bike. Yet, there are downsides to skid plates in general, like added weight and extra frame rigidity. We will be bolting this guy up to one of our test bikes to see how the new coverage works and if we notice any flex inhibiting behavior. Check the DR Tested section of Dirt Rider for the test.
