With rain and snow earlier in the week, Round 3 of the AMA Western National Hare Scrambles series in Globe Arizona looked to have great racing conditions. The course soaked up the moisture and was in perfect condition to start the race weekend. On Saturday, the sun was out and the temperature was in the mid 60’s. The conditions were excellent, setting up a great day of racing on Sunday.
When the racers woke up Sunday morning, Mother Nature greeted with some light snow on the ground. It melted off quickly but left the course a bit wet. The starting line was very moist with some tacky mud, but not sloppy. As the bikes fired to life on the dead engine start, the AMA Pro riders were off, followed by the AMRA Pros, and then the rest of the classes.
After racing in Nevada on Saturday, driving all night, and then getting only a few hours of sleep, EnduroCross and WORCS racer Gary Sutherland jumped out to an early lead. He continued to stretch out his lead every lap including lap three when a freak snow flurry left parts of the course with a dusting of snow. Gary said that “after the snow, the course was a bit wet, but then became really good for the last few laps.” Sutherland’s speed was impressive as he took the overall win with time to spare.
Alex Dorsey jumped into second place early in the race and kept a fast pace to take second place overall. Behind Dorsey, AMRA #1 rider and EnduroCross racer David Broderick came from a second row start to third overall within a couple of laps. On the last lap, Broderick had nice battle with Anson Maloney. Maloney edged him to the line but Broderick beat him on time to take the third place overall.
The Rock Stars Motorcycle club (rockstarsmc.com) did a great job with this event, and it was a great weekend of racing. None of the riders expected to come to Arizona and get snowed on while they were racing, but the weather just made the course better. If you missed it this year, mark your calendar for next year.
