A View from Carson’s World: Devol Radiator Guards - Dirt Rider Magazine

Now that the weather has turned cold and rainy here in the Pacific Northwest, I am dreaming about the great races and rides I got to do last summer. My favorite one has to be the Worcs race that is held at Washougal MX Park. Washougal is already one of the best MX tracks in the world and then you turn it into an off road race and it's unbelievable. They send you around the motocross track and then route you through the woods, rocks and tight stuff that surround the MX Park. You can plan on hitting the ground a few times. It is a 45 minute MX race through the woods! It's a tough race but incredibly fun!

I have had some good luck at this race and have won a few times, but it takes some work to get the bike setup right. The suspension has to be softer than normal to crawl over the tight stuff and you have to run hand guards. I found out last year that radiator guards are a must too. At last years race I clipped a tree and smashed my radiator into a pretzel. It didn't leak, but I had to search E-Bay for another one! Man, radiators are not cheap! Before the Worcs race this year, I decided to get some radiator guards for my KX, to avoid ruining my favorite race of the year. The guys at Devol Engineering make a radiator guard that wraps all the way around the radiator. It isn't just a brace, it's a complete cover and beefy. It can keep sticks, branches, or somebody else's foot peg from going through your radiator.

The guys at Devol are from the Pacific Northwest, so I run into them at some of the races. The Devol family sets up at the races to help the riders out. These guys are a motocross family and live motorcycles every day. My kind of guys! Ted, the owner, started the company in 1980 making aluminum disc guards and has added hundreds of products over the years. Ted has all of his kids working at Devol now. Royce works on suspension and product development, Garret does the web site, marketing and helps run the P.R.O. races, Brock runs the CnC machines, and Shelby takes care of the books and runs the front office. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, check them out at the races or look them up at www.devolracing.com.See ya at the races - Carson
