Got sand...or two-stroke mods? - Dirt Rider Magazine

Dear Dirt Rider,I have a 2002 Honda CR250 and I heard somewhere that one year of the CR250s ran a lot better with a 125 CDI. Also, my pipe is smashed pretty hard and was wondering which one you would recommend. I live in the woods and ride pretty open trails mostly and the rare motocross track but my plan is to spend every weekend in the dunes.Logan Brandstrom

_First off, I should mention that the CR250R holds a special place in my heart. I spent years jumping this bike on the FMX circuit, and the only bike I currently own is, in fact, a CR250R two-stroke. Nothing beats that two-stroke snap and crisp 'braaaap' sound! I've spent a lot of time tinkering with this Honda, and in my experience the best mods are clean jetting, aftermarket reed valves (both VForce and Boyesen work great on the 250cc motor) and either a Pro Circuit (currently on my bike) or FMF Fatty pipe. I haven't heard of the 125 CDI trick but I've found that the further from stock you get the more jetting gremlins you'll run into; keep the mods as simple as possible and your bike will be happy.__On a side note, the CR250R is a great dune bike, but take care that you don't pound that baby into the ground by flogging it through the sand. I've found on my personal bike that mixing pump and race gas can help with detonating issues at high RPM, but nothing beats a well-oiled, properly sealed air filter and regular greasing of your linkage and bearings in terms of prevention. You've got a sweet machine on your hands, and I'd hate to see it turn into another dune junker! Oh, and while you're at it, get your hands on a pipe guard for that new exhaust-it'll save you some dough in the long run if you get too frisky on the trails. Ride hard! -Chris Denison_
