Tested Dirt Bike Products - Acerbis Vented Flag Hand Guards - Experts on Dirtbikes at Dirt Rider Magazine

We needed some hand guards we could use when we rode off-road that would also look fashionable on the motocross track, so we decided to try out the new Acerbis vented flag hand guards. Made from a dual-injection plastic process and integrated with a nylon spine for strength, these hand guards have a nice light look—stylish enough for the moto scene yet sufficiently durable for off-road.The vented flags use separate mounting brackets (sold separately for $11) that enable you to position the hand guards independent of the brake lever position. Nice for those who run their levers lower than most. The separate mounting brackets are also handy because they make changing out the vented guards for the original unvented guards quick should the conditions be muddy and cold.We tested the hand guards in Gorman, California, where we could get the best of both worlds. Gorman has a moto track that is adjacent to some really good, tight, brushy trails perfect for a hand guard test. What we noticed first about the vented flag guards was that we really didn't notice them when on the moto track nearly as much as we did the old Acerbis hand guard models. We also liked the fact that the guard was positioned farther forward from the levers, allowing more lever room. After busting a few laps on the moto track, we headed for trails to see how they held up in the brush. Even though the guards are not wrapped around a one-inch aluminum bar as are most enduro hand guards, their nylon spine is strong enough to hold them in position and protect the lever from being snagged by branches. Having the hand guards trimmed lower and the protection shield with ventilation holes are always pluses for those riding in a California summerlike heat. If you are looking for hand guards that work well in some light off-road riding, are functional and look good on the moto scene, we recommend trying these vented flag hand guards, which retail for $35.DR Tested: 9.0Acerbis USA: 800/659-1440; www.acerbis.com
