2025 Yamaha WR250F

Yamaha’s smallest enduro four-stroke gets an overhaul for 2025.

Overview

Although it’s not specifically a competition model, you could say that Yamaha’s little blue thumper has outlasted the competition in the 250cc off-road trail bike segment. The WR250F is the last remaining quarter-liter four-stroke with a headlight and kickstand you’ll find in the US. There are models from KTM and Husqvarna, but you’ll only find those in Europe. Yamaha’s mighty WR250F is not only still here, but receives a minor overhaul for 2025 aimed at giving it a more competitive edge than before.

Backing up a square, the Yamaha 250cc four-stroke platform, which starts with the dominant YZ250F, is shared with two other models: the YZ250FX closed-course off-road racer and the WR250F off-road trail bike. What exactly are the differences between these three models? It’s a fair question. The WR is at the trail-riding (read: mellower) end of the spectrum while the YZ250F is the motocross weapon, bred for the track with sharp performance, aggressive acceleration, and track-tuned suspension. The YZ250FX splits the difference, with the sharp track-tuned performance from the engine, enhanced for off-road racing with a sixth gear and plusher suspension settings.

The WR is the most trail-friendly of the trio, with a wide-ratio six-speed gearbox; more compliant suspension for traversing rocks, roots, and off-road obstacles; and of course, the visual giveaway, headlight and taillight. An enduro computer with a speedometer, low-fuel indicator, and engine warning lights is tucked behind the front number plate. A radiator fan, 18-inch rear wheel, and O-ring chain mean the WR250F comes prepared for the rugged outdoors.

For 2025, Yamaha outfitted its WR250F with an all-new aluminum bilateral beam frame, aimed at giving it a slimmer, more compact profile. Updated suspension matches the upgrades the WR450F received in 2024, the revisions lowering the center of gravity and delivering what Yamaha calls a more planted feel and increased ability in tight turns. Redesigned air intake and revised bodywork are among more changes you’ll find on Yamaha’s little blue thumper. New four-level traction control and a new handlebar-mounted switch allows on-the-fly engine mapping changes, adding even more appeal to Yamaha’s class-leading electronics package.
